Haitian government issues disarmament deadline to rebels
The interim government of Prime Minister Gerard Latortue has taken the bold decision to tackle head-on the rebel leaders that ousted former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide on 29 February. On 12 July, police and government officials gave the rebels until 15 September to disarm or face arrest. The government called on the rebels to disarm in an open letter to rebel leaders. It said that they had overextended their authority in recent months by acting as a surrogate security force. Some have hailed the decision as a step in the right direction from Latortue who achieved notoriety for his decision to label the rebels 'freedom fighters' shortly after he was sworn in.
