UN faces huge task in Haiti
The UN will assume complete command control in Haiti on 1 July. 'Minustah', the UN `stabilisation' force commanded by Brazilian General Augusto Ribeiro Pereira, replaces the US-led multinational force that moved in after former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide was ousted on 28 February. The UN faces a massive challenge. The rebels that ousted Aristide remain armed and very much at large. Banditry is rife and economic conditions are deteriorating. To compound its problems, the UN is struggling to deploy anything like the 8,700-strong military and police force it promised back in May.
