Arena maintains stranglehold on power in El Salvador as Saca crushes Hándal
El Salvador's ruling party, the Alianza Republicana Nacional (Arena), extended its 15-year monopoly of power with a resounding fourth consecutive victory in the presidential elections on 21 March. With nearly 97% of the ballots counted, Arena's Tony Saca took 58% of the vote. Saca will assume the presidency on 1 June alongside Ana Vilma de Escobar, who becomes the first Salvadorean woman to be elected Vice-President. In his victory speech, Saca said that he had saved the country from communism, although he quickly followed this up by appealing to the opposition to work in concert with him to drive the country forward.
