Guatemala's ruling coalition splinters as Berger courts Rios Montt
President Oscar Berger has failed spectacularly in the first test of his ability to manage congress. In a bid to gain support for his government's fiscal reform bill, Berger chose to pay a visit to retired General Efraín Ríos Montt on 13 May. Ríos Montt is the leader of the discredited Frente Republicano Guatemalteco (FRG), which ran the previous government and holds 33 precious seats in congress.
