Castro turns the screw on domestic opposition
President Fidel Castro turned 79 on 13 August. There is no sign of him mellowing with age. Less than a month earlier, on 22 July, the government rounded up 26 political dissidents in what Cuba's most renowned opposition leader, Oswaldo Payá, described as an unprecedented wave of repression against members of his party. A week later, when US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice appointed an old Latin American hand, Caleb McCarry, to fill a new position to promote and coordinate a peaceful transition to democracy in Cuba, Castro thundered against the Bush administration in his inimitable style.
