OAS called in as crisis deepens in Nicaragua
The new secretary-general of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, was drawn into the seemingly intractable dispute between President Enrique Bolaños and the opposition-dominated national assembly in June. Insulza was called in by Bolaños who, feeling isolated domestically, is desperate to keep the OAS involved. The situation is steadily deteriorating in Nicaragua with the executive and legislature acting almost as if the other does not exist ever since the breakdown of the national dialogue process in April. The latest dispute began on 2 June when the national assembly named its appointments to head the country's public utilities: the superintendency of public services (Sisep) and the regulators for the electricity, water and telecommunications sectors, as well as the representative for consumer rights.
