Arena and FMLN share spoils in El Salvador's legislative elections
President Tony Saca will not have an absolute majority in the legislative assembly for the second half of his mandate. Saca's appeal to Salvadoreans to look beyond party loyalties and vote for the good of the country to enable him to pass important legislation did not have the desired effect as voters adhered more closely to party lines than ever. The ruling Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) and opposition Frente Farabundo Martà para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) took almost an identical proportion of the vote. Both parties are claiming victory.Â
