Haitians given wide choice but no official Lavalas candidate
When Haitians go to the polls on 20 November, assuming the date of the presidential elections is not moved yet again, they will have a choice of some 54 candidates. The ballot list will contain a bewildering array of parties representing the ambitions of individuals rather than competing political ideologies. One man's name will be conspicuous by its absence from the list: Gérard Jean-Juste, a priest chosen by Fanmi Lavalas, the party of exiled former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide, will not be able to run.
