US backs off
The most significant aspect of the first, brief visit by the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, to Mexico on 10 March was how the State Department's press spokesman slapped down reporters who asked whether Rice would talk to President Vicente Fox and his ministers about Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the mayor of Mexico City who could lose his immunity from prosecution. US jurists had been speculating on the case and the US press wanted to know what US policy was on the issue. The combative Adam Ereli, the State Department spokesman, refused to say anything about the issue, claiming that the López Obrador case was an internal Mexican issue and that any parallel with US policy in supporting democracy in Ukraine was false.
