New round of alarms about terrorist threat to Caribbean cruise shipping
The prospect of a terrorist attack on a Caribbean cruise ship - or on shipping through the Panama Canal - has been making the rounds in recent weeks. It has been mentioned in seminars, in connection with the US-led `Trade Winds 2004' military exercises, and with the introduction of new security measures in Panama. The reasons for alarm are not hard to find: Caribbean cruise shipping, a multi-billion-dollar business for shippers and host countries, has been growing while tourism worldwide has been shrinking, and the Panama Canal is the route for about 14% of all US exports, and about 4.5% of global maritime trade.
