‘Farc in Paraguay’: how a kidnapping was inflated into a major threat
The news from Paraguay in late February was alarming. Colombia's Farc guerrillas had helped a far-left local group to kidnap the daughter of a former president. Investigations also suggested that a considerable number of Farc infiltrators were at large in the country, engaged in large-scale subversion through radical peasant organisations. Such was the nature of the perceived threat that President Nicanor Duarte ordered the deployment of troops in a number of rural hotspots. The problem: most of this was untrue.
