Dilma Vana Rousseff, of the left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), was sworn in on 1 January, becoming Brazil’s first-ever female president. In her inaugural speech, alongside her mentor and predecessor, Lula da Silva (2002-2010), Rousseff talked about a future in which Brazil will become “one of the most developed and least unequal nations in the world.” But the past caught up fast with her, with the hunger for power exhibited by the PT and its main coalition partner, the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB), prompting the first political crisis of her government.
