REGION: Fires rage across the Andean region
South America is on course for its worst ever wildfire season. Brazil, Bolivia, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela have all lost more land to fires than any year since 2012, according to statistics compiled by the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS) – a European Union (EU) initiative. In the Andean region, states of emergency have been declared as governments come under mounting pressure to resolve the crisis.
