BRAZIL: Partnering with China on its own terms
China’s President Xi Jinping was hoping to crown his visit to Latin America in November by signing up the region’s largest economy to one of Beijing’s flagship foreign policy and economic development strategies – the Belt and Road Initiative. But consistent with Brazil’s tradition of non-alignment, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva politely declined and instead offered to discuss how China and Brazil could cooperate on mutually agreeable terms.
