BOLIVIA: Rodríguez struggles to build momentum
The spokesperson for Bolivia’s supreme electoral court (TSE), Tahuichi Tahuichi Quispe, has emphatically ruled out the prospect of former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) competing in the 17 August general elections. Tahuichi’s comments on 26 May came amid protests by Morales’ supporters to demand that he be allowed to register as a candidate despite presidential term limits. Morales’ insistence on competing will pose serious problems for Eduardo del Castillo, the candidate for the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). Del Castillo is facing further competition on the left from senate president Andrónico Rodríguez, whose efforts to win the support of Morales’ voters have been met with vitriol by allies of the former president.
