JAMAICA: Green economy could create jobs
A report released in July by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says that if Jamaica adopts a “green economic model” it could create up to 8,000 new jobs and add 1% to its GDP.
The report compares a “business as usual” with a “green model” future for the country. In the green scenario it says thousands of new jobs will be created mainly in services, sales, and clerical support. There will be a J$11.7bn (US$73.8m) increase in investment linked to the country’s nationally determined contributions (NDCs – decarbonisation targets agreed with the UN). The country will also be able to reap major savings if it electrifies road transport, thereby decreasing demand for more expensive liquid transport fuels.
Commenting on the report, UNDP representative Kishan Khoday said “Pursuing a green economic model is not just a strategic choice for Jamaica as a Small Islands Developing State (SIDS) – it is an imperative for survival, resilience, and inclusive prosperity.”
