*Transport companies operating in Peru’s capital Lima and the neighbouring port city of Callao have agreed to strike again on 14 January in protest at the recurrent violence their employees face from extortion gangs. The latest strike is being led by the regional transport lobby group Cámara Internacional de la Industria del Transporte (CIT), which spearheaded strikes last year that contributed to the impeachment in October of former president Dina Boluarte (2022-2025). The CIT’s director, Martín Ojeda, was cited in the local press as saying that “there a total lack of prevention” from the authorities regarding extortion gangs, and that “there’s no system that protects us from this wicked spate of crimes, which take place practically every ten days”. President José Jerí, whose government passed a new anti-extortion law shortly after taking office which aims to reduce violence against transport workers, was cited in the press as saying that he supports the decision to strike. “We all face… a real, tangible problem which is the issue of crime and, specifically, the way it has been affecting the transport sector,” he was reported as saying.
