While the eyes of the world were on the war in the Middle East, the US launched a military operation in Ecuador on 3 March. This action, carried out in coordination with the Ecuadorean security forces, comes as President Daniel Noboa is aiming to secure long-term US military assistance in the battle against organised crime, and as Noboa is promising to step up his crackdown on gangs this month.
