MEXICO: Sheinbaum pushes on with electoral reform
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum presented her ‘Plan B’ electoral reform on 12 March, following the lower chamber’s rejection of the original reform initiative. The new proposal, which is also a constitutional reform, is much scaled down from the first iteration, focusing on cutting costs and boosting citizen participation and leaving aside the more controversial aspects of the initial reform. In a big boost for Sheinbaum, the Partido del Trabajo (PT) and Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM), allies of the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), have announced their backing for the new reform after failing to support the previous proposal en masse, likely ensuring its passage through congress.
