In brief: Roads blocked in Bolivia amid fuel protests
*Bolivia’s public works, services, and housing minister, Mauricio Zamora, has called on protesting transport workers to lift their roadblocks ahead of a meeting today (6 May) between President Rodrigo Paz’s government and the Confederación Sindical de Choferes de Bolivia (CSCB) drivers’ union. The CSCB is demanding compensation for engine damage caused by contaminated fuel distributed by state hydrocarbons company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) and guarantees regarding the quality of future fuel supplies. The national highways authority (ABC) yesterday highlighted roadblocks in the departments of Beni, Potosí, Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, Tarija, and Oruro. The CSCB’s director, Lucio Gómez, said yesterday that the protests will continue if the union does not receive a satisfactory response from the Paz administration in today’s meeting.
