*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has signed an agreement with private sector representatives to regulate the supply and sale of tomatoes in order to establish a “fair price” for the product, which has seen rapid inflation in recent months. The price of tomatoes increased by 19.25% in April compared to the previous month, according to the latest inflation figures from the national statistics institute (Inegi). The voluntary agreement between the government and tomato sellers aims “to guarantee profitability, balance, and market supply and the distribution of tomatoes at a fair price,” according to a statement from the agriculture ministry. Under the agreement, over 12,000 small- and medium-scale tomato producers will be supported with loans, training, technical support, and access to agricultural inputs. According to the statement, those producers harvest at least 3.7m tonnes of tomatoes per year, half of which are exported. The agriculture ministry has been tasked with establishing a digital platform “to associate productive capacity with national demand and export commitments”. On this platform, producers, vendors, and exporters will be able to coordinate to maintain a steady supply at fair prices.
