*Brazil’s ministry of development, industry, trade, and services (MDIC) has said that most of the country’s exports will not be affected by a 25% tariff announced by the US on 15 July and a further 12.5% tariff introduced by Washington on 23 July. In a statement, MDIC said that 52.7% of Brazilian exports to the US would not be affected by the latest tariffs, including coffee, meat, cast iron, aircraft, orange juice, fruit, various chemical products, and most cellulose exports. MDIC calculated that 4.7% of exports will only be hit by the 12.5% tariff, which is part of a package targeting 60 countries that the US claims are failing to enforce forced labour import bans. A further 1.9% of exports will face only the 25% tariff, including sugar. Meanwhile, 16.5% of exports will be hit by both tariffs, bringing the total surcharge to 37.5%. This latter category includes machinery and equipment, various types of timber, fats and oils, shoes, and furniture.
