In brief: US-Mexico business lobby raises concerns over dual nationality reform

*The American Society of Mexico (Amsoc), a business lobby group, has expressed its “deep concern” over a reform passed by the senate on 29 September that would prevent those with dual nationality from running for president, state governor, or Mexico City (CDMX) mayor. In a statement, Amsoc said the reform, which was passed by the senate with 86 votes in favour to 42 against, “implies the loss of political rights for Mexican citizens with dual nationality”. It stated that the reform had been passed without consultation with “the millions of Mexicans who could be affected and without opening a parliamentary space to listen to their arguments”. It also stated that differences in nationality “must not be turned into a motive to restrict rights or to assume disloyalty in a generalised manner”, calling on the authorities and legislators to listen to those affected by the reform and to guarantee that “any reform strengthens democratic inclusion”. The reform, which will now be sent to state congresses for approval, requires those with dual nationality to renounce their non-Mexican nationality before registering to run as a candidate for president, one of Mexico’s 31 state governorships, or for the head of CDMX government. The reform would not apply to next year’s electoral process, in which 17 state governorships are being renewed, or affect those currently in office, but it would impact the 2028 elections, when four gubernatorial races are due in Durango, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, and Tamaulipas.
