MEXICO: US sanctions target Baja California
The US administration of President Donald Trump has announced sanctions against 21 Mexican individuals and 25 companies due to their alleged links with the Cártel de Sinaloa. The sanctions focus on the state of Baja California, which borders the US states of California and Arizona. As well as targeting alleged cartel members, the sanctions also affect former state officials and the ex-husband of the current governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar, a member of the federally ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena). This comes as the US continues to pressure President Claudia Sheinbaum to tackle alleged collusion between officials and organised crime.
