“Until now we have had a good relationship with the ambassador,” said President Claudia Sheinbaum on 5 October, in reference to the US ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson. Sheinbaum was speaking as different points of tension have emerged between her government and the ambassador in recent days, including his participation in the opening of an international police academy in Querétaro state and his assertion that US troops had been shot at from the Mexican side of the border. They also come amid criticisms of the ambassador from Sheinbaum’s predecessor and mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024). Despite Sheinbaum’s claim that relations had been smooth with Johnson “until now”, this is not the first time that her government has taken umbrage at the US ambassador, reflecting the sensitive nature of relations between her administration and that of US President Donald Trump.
