*Brazil’s minister for ports and airports, Tomé França, has announced that Spanish airport operator Aena plans to invest R$1bn (US$199m) over the next three years for expansion works in Rio de Janeiro’s Antonio Carlos Jobim international airport – better known by its original name Galeão. Speaking at a press conference yesterday alongside França, the CEO of Aena Brasil, Santiago Yus, said the investment will fund projects such as a new airport hotel, a maintenance hangar, logistics warehouses, as well as a testing centre on the airport site for the Chinese car manufacturer BYD. Earlier this year Aena was awarded the contract to operate Galeão, expanding its portfolio to 18 airports in Brazil. According to a government press release, Rio’s Galeão airport received 12.67m passengers in January-August 2026, up 10.9% compared to the same period last year, with international passengers totalling 4.32m, up 13.8% year-on-year.
