In brief: Peruvian and Ecuadorean presidents shore up ties
*Peru’s President Keiko Fujimori and her Ecuadorean counterpart, Daniel Noboa, have met in Lima for discussions which largely focused on security and border management, as well as other issues such as trade and the El Niño climate phenomenon. In a joint declaration, they agreed that their two governments would expand cooperation against organised crime and boost intelligence sharing. Illegal mining was raised as a key concern. More broadly, they committed to advancing with electricity interconnection projects, cooperation on natural gas, and on water resource management, among other things. During Noboa’s visit, the countries’ state oil companies, Petroecuador and Petroperú, signed an agreement whereby Petroecuador will sell 16.2m barrels of crude to Ecuador. This will generate US$1.65bn in revenue for the Ecuadorean state, according to Petroecuador, and will make the company the main supplier to Petroperú’s Talara refinery.
