In brief: Brazilian poultry exports partially suspended following disease outbreak
*Brazil’s agriculture ministry has announced temporary partial suspensions on poultry exports imposed by various trade partners, including China, following a recent case of Newcastle disease, a viral disease similar to avian flu. The agriculture ministry noted that as of yesterday (20 October), Mexico has suspended poultry exports from the whole of Brazil, while China and Chile have suspended various poultry products from the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, where the disease outbreak was detected. On 19 October the Brazilian government confirmed that a case of Newcastle disease was detected in a commercial turkey farm in Nova Itaberaba municipality, in Santa Catarina. Although the Brazilian government did not mention Paraguay in its list of suspensions, Paraguay’s national animal health service (Senacsa) announced yesterday it would also temporarily suspend the importation of Brazilian poultry products from Santa Catarina.
