In brief: Argentina’s lower chamber approves disability benefits bill
*Argentina’s lower chamber of congress has approved a bill amending the national disability law. The bill, which was passed with 237 votes in favour to nine against, preserves many of the benefits provided for in law 27,793, which declared a national emergency in the disability benefits system and which Milei’s government had attempted to block. However, it goes one step further to remove the emergency and transitional nature of the benefits and establish a permanent system governed by public policy. Among other things, the bill guarantees pensions and medical coverage for those with disabilities, restores funding, and settles debts with providers. The bill now goes to the senate for approval.
