A succession of political scandals has shaken the government. The government has now shed eight cabinet members and more may go. President Abel Pacheco is being tainted by a congressional investigation into the way the two main parties financed the elections last year. The treasurer of his party, the Partido Unidad Social Cristiano, refused to speak when called to testify to the investigation earlier this month (September), on the grounds that he might incriminate himself.
