DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: One dead, 53 injured in massive strike
The island of Hispaniola is in turmoil. Daily protests calling for the
resignation of Haiti's President Jean-Bertrand Aristide are now being mirrored
on the other side of the island in the Dominican Republic. Yesterday, the first
day of the 48-hour strike called by the Dominican umbrella protest group
Coordinadora de Unidad y Lucha against the government's economic policies
paralysed activity in the capital Santo Domingo and elsewhere in the country.
One person died and 53 people were injured as protesters clashed with police and
the armed forces patrolling the streets.
