ECUADOR: Gutiérrez embroiled in another drug scandal
President Lucio Gutiérrez has been entangled in a campaign-financing scandal. Legislator Carlos González alleged that Gutiérrez received financing for his electoral campaign in 2002 from Ecuadorean businessman Marco Velasco Freire, who was his former presidential advisor. Velasco has amassed a fortune; he owns 11 companies and 21 properties. He is being investigated for money-laundering. Gutiérrez denies that Velasco funded his campaign.
