Justice minister Márcio Thomaz Bastos last week told congress that Brazil has become one of the countries with the greatest number of homicides and armed robberies, ranked after Colombia, South Africa and Jamaica. His address opened the 'week of public security' launched by the government to muster support for an anti-crime drive.
