Weekly Report - 7 October 2003

Once again, Marta Sahagún, wife of President Vicente Fox, has dropped a broad hint that she might run for the presidency in 2006. Addressing a seminar on `Woman, leadership and power' in the capital last week, she proclaimed that Mexico is ready for its first woman president. `Let nobody doubt that several women have their sights set on that position and are working silently and cautiously to attain it. We don't know who [the first woman President] is, how old she is, where she works or where she comes from. Probably she's here, in this very forum. What we can be sure of is that she will get there and will know how to act with a great sense of justice and equity.'
