Ecuador opposition offers alternative constitution
Development: On 21 August the
opposition presented an alternative constitution to challenge the
text proposed by the government of President Rafael
Correa.
Significance: The so-called "Citizen's
constitution" was drawn up by opposition delegates from the national constituent
assembly to express their opposition to Correa's constitutional project. If the
new constitution is not approved in the referendum on 28 September, the
opposition asambleístas have said that
they will present the document
to (the currently dissolved) congress, which will be re-instated.
