This week the US ambassador in Managua, Barbara Moore, will receive a petition from ex-Contras for some US$700m in compensation from the US, which armed and financed their war against the Sandinistas in 1979-90. The initiative was announced last week by Salvador Talavera, president of the Partido Resistencia Nicaragüense (PRN, the party formed by the ex-Contras) — but he says the party is merely endorsing a decision taken by 300 former Contra comandantes.
