Poll trouble for Brazil's Serra?
Development: On 23 November the latest CNT/Sensus poll
was released indicating a fall in support for the leading 2010 presidential
contender, José Serra of the main centrist opposition Partido da Social
Democracia Brasileira (PSDB).
Significance: Serra,
who is still not the confirmed PSDB candidate, insists that he will not begin
his electoral campaign until after party primaries in June next year. The PSDB,
however, is getting nervous, as the presumptive candidate for the ruling Partido
dos Trabalhadores (PT), Dilma Rousseff, is already effectively on the campaign
trail at home and abroad, with the heavy backing of the enormously popular
President Lula da Silva.
