Peru's gas protests enter second week
Development: On 3 August the violent mobilisation in Cusco
against the exporting gas from Camisea's, Peru's largest natural gas deposit,
entered its eighth day.
Significance: The leaders
of the protest will decide (today, 4 August) whether to call the mobilisation
off. The leaders are hoping for a concession from congress, but congress set the
ending of the demonstrations as a precondition for dialogue.
