Immigration: The US authorities arrested and deported the prominent illegal immigrant Elvira Arellano on 20 August. On 15 August she left the sanctuary of a church in Chicago, where she had been living for a year. She had been campaigning for immigrants' rights in Los Angeles, where she was eventually arrested and deported to Tijuana. Her eight-year old son, Saúl, was born in the US, which means he can remain in the US. Arellano worked cleaning aeroplanes at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, with a fake social security number. The Mexican foreign ministry said that the deportation of Arellano broke the spirit of bilateral agreements.
