Brazil: US secretary of commerce, Carlos Gutiérrez, visited Brazil on 10 October to discuss ethanol and bio-fuels as well as promote trade between the two countries. Gutiérrez met the Brazilian minister for development industry and foreign trade, Miguel Jorge, well as Brazilian foreign minister, Celso Amorim, to discuss intellectual property and the Doha talks. Gutiérrez told journalists that Brazil's leadership "is key" for concluding the world trade liberalisation talks, which according to him "is closer to concluding [successfully] despite what people may think". Gutiérrez said that the US sees Brazil as a leader and called upon the Brazilian government to "make concessions [...] as this will persuade other developing nations to do the same".
