COLOMBIA
The US ambassador in Colombia, William Brownfield, backed Colombian President Alvaro Uribe in his decision to withdraw his consent for President Hugo Chávez 's mission to organise a prisoner exchange in Colombia. Brownfield said on 27 November that the US had supported Chávez 's mediation as requested by Uribe last August to negotiate an agreement with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) to swap hostages for Farc members who are in jail. Brownfield's support for Uribe was echoed by US State department spokesman Sean McCormack who said that the US would continue working with the Colombian government to secure the release of the hostages and that as regards the end of the mission, "that is a sovereign decision for Colombia and Venezuela in terms of their action and their reaction to it".
