Argentina: Argentina's President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner met the US ambassador to Argentina, Earl Wayne on 31 January. The Argentine government hailed the meeting a success because Wayne said that the prosecutors investigating the suitcase scandal in Miami are not targeting Argentina but Venezuelan spies operating illegally in the US. According to cabinet chief Alberto Fernández, the meeting has paved the way for the US assistant secretary for western hemispheric affairs, Tom Shannon to visit Argentina in the near future. Separately, a journalist Héctor Timerman, a son of a prominent dissident journalist, Jacobo, was appointed as Argentina's new ambassador to the US.
