ARGENTINA: Argentina's foreign ministry issued a statement on 11 September accusing the US of politicising a trial of alleged Venezuelan spies in Miami. Argentina is furious after US prosecutors produced tapes at the trial which show, apparently, that Venezuela's president, Hugo Chávez , tried to donate US$800,000 to the election campaign of Argentina's president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. The foreign ministry said that this kind of political manoeuvring would adversely affect relations with the US. The US embassy in Buenos Aires released a statement on 11 September assuring the Argentine government that the US government had no control over what was happening in the Miami courtroom.
