MEXICO | ‘La Familia leader' arrested. On 21 June the federal police arrested José de Jesús Méndez Vargas (‘el Chango'), who was presented as the leader of La Familia Michoacana (LFM), the drug cartel which, in February, had announced its dissolution. The official version is that Méndez Vargas had taken over the reins of the LFM after its previous leader, Nazario Moreno (‘el Más Loco'), was reported killed in a two-day shootout with federal police in December 2010 (his body has never materialised).
