GUATEMALA | Historic conviction. On 2 August a “high risk” court in Guatemala City (so called because of the threat the accused pose to judges and witnesses) handed down life sentences to the four special forces soldiers accused of involvement in the 1982 Las Dos Erres massacre, eight days after the trial began [WR-11-30], and amid other signs of a widening crackdown on past military impunity. Hailed by local and international human rights organisations alike, the conviction is the first for a massacre perpetrated during the 1960-1996 civil war.
