Cuba | Pope calls for renewal.  In Santiago de Cuba on 26 March, Pope Benedict XVI called on Cubans to reinvigorate their faith so that they may “strive to build a renewed and open society, a better society, one more worthy of humanity”. He also rejected the excesses of capitalism. Upon arrival at the airport in the same city, the Pope stated that he carried in his heart “the just and legitimate desires of all Cubans, wherever they are, their sufferings and joys, their worries and most noble desires and in particular of young people and children, of ill people and workers, of prisoners and their families, as well as the poor and needy”. The Pope will not meet Cuban political dissidents on his two-day visit.
