POLITICS | Fujimori fudges it again. On 30 October the imprisoned former president, Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), said he would “adhere to” the humanitarian pardon request, submitted to the authorities by his family on his behalf, via a document with his signature to be presented today (31 October). Fujimori’s refusal to sign the actual request, which he claims is not “required” from a legal perspective, is the latest twist in the current wrangling triggered by the formal petition made by Fujimori’s four children on 10 October to grant the former leader a humanitarian pardon. Previously, Justice Minister Eda Rivas told reporters that that Fujimori must sign the pardon request because, to be pardoned, “one must recognise that crimes have been committed”.
