BRAZIL: Lula's popularity decisive in municipal elections

Brazil & Southern Cone 25 September 2008 Modified: 25 September 2008 605 views

President Lula da Silva's personal approval rating stands at an impressive 77.7%, according to the most recent opinion poll by CNT/Sensus. This is his best rating since taking office in 2003. Significantly, the poll suggests that 44.1% of Brazilians will cast their vote in the October municipal elections for a candidate backed by Lula. The Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) government is also very popular - 68.8% of respondents gave it a positive rating. This is the best result for a government since CNT/Sensus began compiling this poll in 1998, and should bode well for a candidate chosen by Lula to compete in the presidential elections in 2010.
