DIPLOMACY| Piñera puts UDI in its place. On 21 January the government of President Sebastián Piñera recognised that Cuba’s President, Raúl Castro, enjoyed “immunity”. The announcement followed a threat by the Unión Democrática Independiente (UDI), the senior partner in the ruling coalition, to take unspecified “actions” against the Cuban leader in relation to the 1991 assassination of Senator Jaime Guzmán, the UDI’s founder. The UDI claims that Cuba is harbouring Guzmán’s killers. On 20 January Patricio Melero, the UDI president, announced that he had new information about the investigation. Castro is due to visit Chile to participate in the 26-27 January summit of the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac).
