POLITICS | Capriles challenges election result before supreme court. On 2 May Venezuela’s opposition Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD) filed an appeal before the supreme court against the 14 April presidential election. Gerardo Fernández, a lawyer for the MUD, said the 180-page appeal was against the entire electoral process and sought to annul the elections and request a new ballot. He said the appeal includes complaints relating to incidents prior to the election. The defeated opposition presidential candidate, Henrique Capriles Radonski, claims there were thousands of irregularities on the day, including the names of 200,000 dead people on the electoral register. "This is not over. No one here can get tired or throw in the towel", Capriles stated at a later press conference, before he was interrupted by a government ‘cadena,’ an obligatory State broadcast that all local channels are obliged to show live. President Nicolás Maduro yesterday accused Capriles of trying to create “civil war” in Venezuela.
